Look. I'll share a piece of advice with you, since I'm feeling touched by an angel and all. Somebody told me once that beating yourself up about the stuff you can't do is pointless. If you did everything you could to help, that's plenty. Better than the guys who did nothing or caused the problem in the first place, anyway.
