How... had something from Mycroft managed to reach him here? More importantly, was there something about Mycroft that he ought to know? Even over Sherlock? Why not contact him first?

It is John's curiosity and concern for Mycroft's safety that prompts John to open the letter and load the SD card into his laptop.

He watches the video and stares. And stares. This is similar to those dvds he and Sherlock had watched once. This was when he'd left the room. The one he didn't dare watch. Were it anything else, he wouldn't have thought anything of it. An elaborate hoax.
