Once, in a faraway land, there was a princess who bartered her life for the happiness of her people. The only person who was unhappy was her handmaiden, who could never be made as happy by the princess's magic as she could by the princess's presence. She set out into the world to quest, as a knight in the princess's name, but she became lost in strange lands.
Once, in a very rainy and kind of dreary country, a boy was born to a rich family. First-born and heir, but his parents didn't love him, because he wouldn't do and think and act as he was told.
They didn't like the friends he made, they wanted to choose them. They wanted to choose who he marries, too. So the boy ran away with some of his friends and together they had a lot of adventures and made enemies and allies. Until one day, something happened to divide the friends, a betrayal that got one of them murdered with his family.
The boy who'd run away from home and thought he'd have an amazing life with his friends was shocked and he went after the traitor and tried killing him. But the traitor got away and made it look as if he'd been killed and the boy was arrested for murder of his best friend and of the traitor who used to be a friend.
He was supposed to be hanged, but he vanished and no one's heard of him since.
If nothing matters, there's no reason to do anything. Even if you lose what matters to you a hundred times, if you don't find it one hundred and one, eventually the boy in the story will become a monster.
His friends would want a better ending to the story than that.
There will always be people who face the evils of the world head-on. Even though they might inevitably give into despair, and they'll fail alone and unmourned, if they've given others hope, then they don't have to lose their happy endings.
Their stories matter. And making sure they know that -- that matters too.

That's an interesting story. With everything left behind, what would the boy do now?
