He'd never built a real emotional connection to his real parents as they were an inconsistent thing in his life. There was never any telling when or even if they'd be back so it was just easier to avoid getting attached. This made it much easier to avoid building emotional connections with others so it didn't bother him nearly as much as it should have that the person that was supposed to be in charge of him was gone-or so he told himself. It wasn't that he'd been attached and more than he hoped nothing bad had happened to the man called Nick Miller. But he was gone now, and from what he understood of how this place worked, he wouldn't be seeing him again.

It takes an embarrassingly long time for him to find the note stating he was to be moved to another room, that he's to have another guardian. He reads the slip over rather boredly before he getting to the name to the new guardian and immediately perks back up- Sherlock Holmes! If he'd been having a bad day before this news immediately brightened it for all of five seconds. What if Holmes said no? What then? Could he say no? Ordinarily Shinichi might have tried to guilt trip him but not Holmes-for one it probably wouldn't work and two, he just has too much respect for the elder to try something like that. But if he waits any longer someone would be sent to help him move his things and he imagines the government here was the last thing Holmes wanted to deal with-especially on the topic of being forced to take custody of a child.

Still, he stalls, working through every possible situation that could happen in his head-rehearsing what he could say and this time hopeful avoid getting too tongue tied and also it gives him time to pack his things and have them ready to go for whenever he moves… wherever. Hopefully in with Holmes. It doesn't waste nearly as much time as he would have liked as he'd only been in New Moore for about two months so other than some new clothes the only thing he really has is a large pile of books. …Maybe he should alphabetize them? By Author and genre?

That done, he had thoroughly ran out of things to kill time with and finally took a deep breath. If he waited any longer it would get to be too late and tomorrow morning the government would get involved. He grabs the notice and the envelope it came in and heads out into the hall before moving towards room 105, the path to the door seeming to stretch on forever. He swallows nervously in attempts to force down any lingering anxiety and, with the notice clamped tightly in one hand, knocks on the door-fighting the urge to just run away back to room 103.

John had had a particularly frustrating day at work, getting used to, once again, letting things settle back to normal. Unfortunately, that meant that the surgery was flooded with ill-gotten injuries and poorly-dressed wounds from the previous week, leaving John feeling drained and worn from the day's activities. That's why, when the knock comes at the door, he is a little less than pleased, and looks expectantly to Sherlock to answer it. But Sherlock never answers the door. He has people for that. Those people mostly being John.

A moment passes before he sighs, sets down his paper, and gets to his feet. "No, no. Don't worry yourself, I'll get it," he says as he drags his feet to the door. He wonders who could be knocking, the flat not usually so welcome to visitors. He is pleasantly surprised, however, to see the young boy outside the door when he opens it. "He..llo." He looks puzzled. "Can I.. help you with something?"

For his part, Sherlock has been sulking over both the arrival of the woman and the loss of his captaincy in equal parts, though he wouldn't admit the latter under pain of death. He barely even moves from his dejected slump on the sofa to send a glance in the direction of the people in the doorway. "His previous flatmate's been released and he's been reassigned here," he announces, sounding as if this very fact had been manufactured specifically to add to the unfairness of his life.

John takes the paper, not asking how in the world Sherlock could have deduced that their visitor was set to move in with them... however, upon reading the paper he was given, naturally, Sherlock was correct. It takes a moment for John to read it all over and certify its authenticity, but eventually smiles and steps aside for him to enter. "Well, welcome home, I suppose." He looks past him and out into the hall. "Have you brought anything with you? I could help carry some things if you like."

Utterly unsurprised by John's lack of argument, Sherlock finally musters the motivation to roll over and peer at the child appraisingly. The boy's network communications haven't been unusually dull for his age - in fact, he's seemed fairly bright in comparison to even most of the adults on the island, as far as Sherlock had observed, and his unusual idolization of Sherlock is less disturbing than the fans Sherlock knew he'd acquired back in London (god, the videos, why) so while Sherlock recognizes the island's obviously not at all random housing assignment as an attempt at humor, it's not the worst arrangement in the world. God, he could have been assigned that one loud grey horned teenager, what a headache.

"Shinji's room is empty," he says at last. "Don't touch the third cabinet on the right from the sink."

"You... probably don't want to know. I'm not even sure that I want to know." John sighs and continues smiling. "Well, if you like, I can start bringing things over while you settle in and get to know the flat." He glances back to Sherlock. "As Sherlock has said, there is an empty room, and you are, of course, free to it. Oh, and uh... don't open anything in the refrigerator unless it actually looks like food. Even then, you might want to be careful."

Naturally, Sherlock makes absolutely no attempt to offer his assistance in the actual moving. After a moment of peering intently at Shinichi, he drops the serious expression in favour of a smirk. "Just the spice rack, actually," he says. "It was a test."

"No, no. Go ahead and make yourself comfortable. Get to know one another." John then casts a look over in Sherlock's direction, a scrutinous eyebrow raised. "Be nice." He then smiles at Shinichi and steps out to head to the boy's flat to collect his things.
