[Video: Locked to Tim only, High Security] Forward-dated to tomorrow morning.
[Close-up of Tim staring into his webcam.]
Good morning, Tim. This is your orientation video, December Tenth, Twenty-Twelve Edition. You didn't enter your failsafe code last night, which means either the network is down, you've been released from the island without anyone locating your off-site back-up hard-drive, or the island is messing with your mind again.
Since the first two scenarios don't matter, let's skip to the third. Two years ago you were kidnapped from Gotham City to another world, and the island of New Moore. Here, they tell you -- and everyone else in this apartment quad -- that you're fictional characters, and that the strange mind-bending phenomena happening here are an unforeseen side effect of the unreal becoming real. You don't buy it. In any case, you're stuck on the island, and since I can't predict what kind of deranged curveball the island has thrown you now, I don't know what you remember of your life, or what you believe is real, except the fact that you and I probably don't agree. That's a problem. So every ten days I record this primer video. Here's what I know about us that you need to know before you set foot outside.
First. Basics. Tim Drake, age nineteen, Chem & Criminology Major at NMCC. You work at Ianto Jones' coffeeshop, the New Brew. More on Ianto later. People know you as reserved, sometimes rude, a good hacker, a good student, a flaky friend, and... usually a pretty lousy boyfriend. Sorry. Trying to fix that. You're athletic -- gymnatics, martial arts, parkour. You're smart -- too smart for your own good -- which brings us to item two on the primer.
Informational security. Tim, when you failed to enter the failsafe code, your server -- and your closet -- were set to high security. Don't try to crack either one. I'm counting on you to keep these secrets, and that means even from yourself. In less than a week the island will be back to normal, and the secrets will keep till then if you leave them alone. I'm not going to compromise anything -- I don't know who you are right now, or who's with you, or... anything. This is important. Don't screw it up. People I care about are coutning on me, trusting me to keep them safe -- and I'm trusting you not to pry. Don't let us down.
Three. Not everyone is going to be confused by what's going on. There are always some people left unaffected. But the affected ones are hard to predict, and you might remember them differently than I do. So here's a list of some of the people that matter to me. Names, photos, and basic information are below.
1) Feliks. Your roommate in North 204. Feliks is, believe it or not, the personified country of Poland. Literally. He can be hard to get along with, but he means well. I promise. If he remembers you he's expecting you to keep the place stocked with donuts and sausages. No. That's not a euphemism.
2) Ramona Flowers. You and Ramona dated for a year. In October you broke up. Neither one of you can really commit to the other... not in the ways you both need. It's awkward. You're still friends, though. Ramona's a lot of fun, but she doesn't like to be crowded, and she doesn't like things predictable or boring.
3) Seta Souji. If you have to trust anyone, trust Souji. He's saved you. Mostly from yourself. A lot. Right now, Souji's doing his best to look out for everyone he can, no matter what is going on. Help him. He's good at it. If you need help, go to either Souji or
4) Ianto Jones. Your boss at the New Brew. You and Ianto understand one another. If you remember Gotham, think of him as half butler and half big brother. Ianto's had your back, even when you're arguing with
5) Jack Harkness. Ianto's boyfriend and your former boss, you and Jack have been through some rough spots and are trying to patch up. If he thinks he's still in charge, just agree and drop out of sight afterward if you need to. Or get Ianto to fill you in.
6) Charles Xavier. Genetics professor and telepath. You're a good student, Tim, and he likes you, but if you don't remember how to keep psychics out of your head, steer clear of him. He worries about your ethics.
So do I.
7) Steph Brown. Okay. December Tenth New Material. Tim, you've known Steph since Gotham. She's new to the island, but... She's your oldest friend, your oldest flame, and nobody else is going to see through your bullshit quicker than she is. She might expect you to be a terse jerk, which could work to your advantage, but forget that for a minute. Listen. I can't... I can't tell you enough about Steph in one video. She deserves a primer of her own. Just... no matter what's happening on the island, there is absolutely nothing that matters more than making sure Steph is safe. Understood? Nothing. Just because she can take care of herself doesn't mean she's not in over her head.
8) Kate Bishop. Um. Two dates and a third coming up this weekend makes her your current girlfriend, I guess. First date was dinner and a movie, second date was hiking. You're going clubbing this Sunday, assuming that the island still has clubs. Kate's fun, she's athletic, and you two don't know each other very well, but since her Homecoming, asking her out has always been the plan. Pay close attention to her, okay? And, um, you haven't gotten past first base yet, so don't assume anything, all right?
9) Victor Mancha. Victor's not a friend. He has it in for you, Tim, and you've kind of earned it. Keep an eye out for him. If and only if it is life-or-death to break your own security, though, and Ianto doesn't remember, he's the man who can do it. Just remember that you can't be sure what he would do with that information, and don't jump the gun.
Good luck.
