Right.

Now that I'm done gawking at this ... thing that allows me to communicate to other people. Somehow. I almost wish I could perform magic like this. I'm Merlin. Servant to King Arthur of Camelot. I'm also a sorcerer, something I couldn't tell other people before but that's changed. In any case, I won't bother you with the details. I was hoping someone might actually bother me with the details? Like what is going on? I'd also welcome any explanation as to how this room is lit without any torches. I certainly haven't mastered that kind of magic.

So if anyone would help me out, I'd be very grateful. I might even return the favour somehow. Just don't ask me for love spells and potions. I've had bad experiences with those and trust me, you really don't want to clean up afterwards. You really really don't.

It's a kidnapping situation, only without the typical demands for ransom or political motivations behind it. You are in New Moore. It's an island and you can't leave, though plenty of people have tried one way or another. Apart from the original talk about how you were fake it never seems to come up again and there's no apparent motivation for who they pick, why they pick them, or why they bring us here. The government is a sham, they will make you go to school, and weird things happen all the time without any explanation. I think that covers the basics of everything?

It's a sham, I think. I wouldn't bother with it. If there was anything to get there somebody would have uncovered it by now, and nobody ever mentions it.

No, I mean. What is it?

The government is like that. For you, it would be the king or the queen. Here, it's some kind of democratic type thing that isn't really doing anything, as far as I can tell. The government is whoever imposes laws and public institutions and so on, the people in charge.

So they don't exist here.

Kings and queens? Not really. We have an empress-to-be running around, but she's not empress-to-be of here.

What has it done so far?

Absolutely nothing, I'm pretty sure. I never heard of them doing anything about anything. Not even when something got blown up.

Not much of a government then.

Nope! You'd have more luck with the police, but it's staffed by fellow prisoners. But if anybody knows anything, it's probably them.

What's a police?

It's not stupid! I'm still figuring out what all the human terms mean. It's the human- future human- equivalent of a peace keeping and law enforcing group, charged with making sure people don't go around killing and looting and making disturbances.

They aren't very good at it.
