We're all supposed to get roommate's here, right?

There's another bed here, but no sign of whoever I'm supposed to be with. [Which is fine with her, but it's...unsettling a little. Was whoever she's supposed to be suddenly...gone? Did the Doctors get them and just....she doesn't want to think about it.

Unless those damn birds killed them--no, no she won't even let her mind go that far.]

Also, anyone got a first aid kit or somethin'? [Just a small scrape from diving down from a pack of birds. Nothing major.]

Geronimo! [If she called him a mad scientist, she really wouldn't be that far off.

He opens the door of her apartment and then snaps his fingers theatrically - and the doors to the TARDIS fall open. He gestures for her to go first, smiling broadly.
] Take a look~

[The Doctor walks into the TARDIS, spreading his arms grandly.] Freaky? Aww, come now, don't say that - you'll hurt her feelings!

It's timelord science. Bigger on the inside! Basically, it's another dimension. The outer shell - the police box - is a disguise.

We could go to the disco room if you want fog and lights and music! [He gestures toward one of the hallways.]

Well, every time the TARDIS lands, she analyzes the surroundings, calculated a twelve-dimensional data map of everything within a thousand miles, and determines which outer shell would blend in best! Turned up in 1963 one time, she disguised herself as a police telephone box, and the circuit burned out.

Oy! Don't go bashing disco now! Disco is cool! [The Doctor bobs his head and moves back and forth in a terrible - and probably quite hilarious - imitation of disco dancing before changing tracks to answer her next questions.] Not really a shop to go do, I do all the repair work myself - but why would I want to fix it? I like the police box! Don't you?

Ohh... Just about everything you can think of, really! Library, swimming pool, squash court, engine room, the cloister room, the eye of harmony, wardrobe, sun room...

Oh! And the zero room, I love the zero room!

Well, I hardly need her to blend in here, do I?

No, the zero room is the perfect place for neurological healing. It's cut off from all the random electrical and radiological influences of the rest of the universe. Although, come to think of it... I don't think I've seen it around recently.

Preppy? What does that mean?

Too bad you didn't come earlier - there were three of us for a time.

More of a serious -?

Well, yes, I suppose so. [He takes on more of a serious tone himself.] I think who we regenerate into is always at least a little affected by what happened in our previous regeneration. He was me right after the war.

No, I don't think so - though, actually, it's not the first time that has happened. There were five of me, once!

[There's a pause, as Eleven wonders to himself why he brought up the war. Events recently must have brought more things to the surface than he thought, things he'd rather keep hidden.

When he speaks again, his voice is quieter and sadder, more halting in his speech.
] The war, yes... the last great time war.

Long story, it was a bad day. Bad stuff happened.

[Aaaand right back to normal.] No, sorry, not five of me here, just five of me together, in the same place at the same time. And five different versions of me, not five of me me. Although there were two of me me together once!

Well, the copy was just as real, just as me as the original me is. Had a bit of a bother with that, actually - most the humans had a bias against the duplicates. [He talks on, frowning a bit, apparently oblivious to how close to home this is going to hit for Sarah.] We actually switched shoes - pretended to be each other for a time - to see if there was really a difference between us or not. Not even my closest friends saw through it, and they treated me as if... well, as if I wasn't real, I suppose. Just a copy, no history between us, no affection for me. They were almost afraid of me, I think.

The situation wasn't helping, of course - the island about to blow, all the humans with duplicates too, and everything devolving into a primitive 'us versus them' kind of attitude. And the duplicates, though they didn't want it to be that way, knew their own minds well enough to tell what their original counterparts would decide.

[He looks at her seriously, and there is an ancient sadness in his expression and in his voice.] In such a situation, I don't think anybody can really 'win'.

There were losses on both sides, but we eventually got everyone to recognize and respect the duplicates' basic humanity, and I got everyone who was left off the island before it blew.

[He sees the bitterness in her, and without any outward sign, his perception of the conversation shifts, suddenly understanding her position perfectly. His voice is soft and understanding, though it has lost none of its sadness.] You're as human as they come, Sarah. I'm sorry about what happened. What they did to you was wrong.

Do you want to talk about it?
icanbuyafez: (fear me)

[This isn't how either his medical visits or his times introducing someone new to the TARDIS usually go - but by now he's forgotten all of that, his entire focus solely on her.] Of course not. Nothing about it is easy. But you are human, Sarah, so very human - an individual, with a mind and a will and a soul all your own. They can't take that away from you, nobody can.

[There's an edge of anger to the sadness now, a fury barely hinted at, but when unleashed bathe entire worlds in flame.] You're not property, no matter what anybody says. No matter what the law says. [He says the word 'law' with something akin to disdain.]

If the law says you're not a person, that just means the law - and the forces behind it - have to be removed. [He says this with complete confidence and sincerity. He he ever runs into a government that says that Sarah is property, he plans to take down that government. He's done it before, and probably will again.]

[The anger abruptly collapses, or at least is buried under something even stronger, when she asks her final questions. It's a question he's faced before, one he's shouted at the universe, demanding an answer. Why, why was he the only one left? Why had he been the only one who could end the terror and the insanity, the one who had to destroy both almighty civilizations - his ancient enemy... and the even worse one. His own.

The universe never replied.

So he understands her question, her pain and sorrow, even more fully than she understands it herself. He's lived with this burden for centuries, with all his friends and family, everyone who could have helped him through, helped him answer the question gone. Dead. By his own hand.

The sheer weight of pain and guilt and sorrow and loneliness in his voice when he replies is staggering, though he himself doesn't even hear it anymore.
]

I think you know as well as I do that there's no answer to that question, not the one you're really asking. We just have to keep on living, regardless of the questions or the answers, in defiance of the fear and the pain and the injustice of it all.

[The Doctor takes in a sharp breath - he hadn't realized she had a daughter before. He responds slowly, gently.] Again, Sarah, there is no easy answer. There never is. That's life. You make the best you can of it, and do what you can for the people you love.

[His voice grows harder, more certain and determined.] As to who's to say they won't strip you to nothing? I am. I won't let it happen.

Neither you nor your daughter are property. If they try to take her away, we'll stop them. I'll bring them down so they can never bother you again. Or if you wanted, you and your daughter could come away with me, and leave them all in the dust. I could bring you anywhere in the universe.

[He unconsciously straightens his bowtie.] You'll get the opportunity you should have had to be the mother you want to be. I promise you that.
