So this place is kind of quiet.
Pirates aside, I mean.
But I really don't miss the zombies.
You have no idea how much I really don't miss the fucking zombies.
[Private to R]
I don't mean you, R.
Obviously.
I mean I don't even really think of you as one of them anymore.
[Private to Koizumi]
So, I've been thinking. Can we talk?

[Action]
[The scarf helps a lot. She drops her finger down R's arm and takes his hand, gently swinging their arms together.]
I've been colder. It's not so bad.
[Still, that doesn't mean she won't hug his arm with her free hand anyway. Even if he's not exactly warm, it still feels like he is. Maybe it's some kind of placebo effect.]
I've asked Koizumi if I can join the police force.
[action]
Well, she'd have to let go first which he doesn't really want her to so maybe later. ]
Why?
[ Police force, Julie? Seems kind of. Military-law-enforcing, doesn't it? ]
[action]
[That was a thought she'd had - did she really want to go down that road? Her first instinct had been to dismiss it, but of course there was another reason.
It was that reason which had prompted her final decision.]
What happened to you, that could happen again. To you, or to someone else who doesn't mean any harm. I can't sit by, knowing that.
[She looks up at him.]
You protected me, R. So many times when you didn't have to. Now it's my turn.
[action]
Don't argue, lover boy. Her mind was already made up before she told you.
Oh damn. He's looking back at her. Keep me safe? Huh.
He doesn't doubt things would probably be better with her working to make it that way. Koizumi was a good guy. Lin's a good person... More of them would work out better for everyone in general eventually.
And he's got to admit someone giving a shit about him enough to join a police force is a fucking nice thought. But still. Ugh. He's running it through his brain a couple of times. ]
...Then mutual safety. [ Probably follow you around on your shifts. If you don't mind. ]
[action]
They likely wouldn't have been questions that he could answer, anyway.]
... Okay. I can agree to that.
[She draws him to a stop and takes both his hands in hers, holding them to her.]
You're the only person here that I can trust, R. You know how important that is, don't you?
[action]
She wants to protect him back because then she'd have no one. It's okay. He's not going to go anywhere.
He nods at her, staring off at their hands ]
[action]
[Julie rocks her weight in a strange kind of indecisiveness as she places one hand to the side of R's face.
The only person she really knows she can trust...
She bobs up onto her toes and touches a quick, but undoubtedly warm kiss to his mouth.]
Thank you.
[action]
That was quick but he's got his eyes shut when she pulls back. Warm kisses. And then he inhales a breath he's not actually going to use for breathing because that would be ridiculous -it's just a think like wheezing, right? And then opens his eyes to resume the regularly scheduled staring.
Wow. Did that just happen?
Pretty much the greatest thing ever. That felt alive. Like that rush from brains only better because it's actually real.
Just. Wow. Too quick. Do it again. Or... wait. Maybe don't. That's probably not safe for you.
All well. He's not going to stop smiling right now. ]
[action]
Was that okay?
[Because he's not saying much of anything and.. well. She feels fine so she probably didn't catch anything.]
[action]
Yes...
[ That was definitely okay. ]
[action]
[Good, then. She lets go of one of his hands but keeps the other, tucking a wisp of hair behind her ear.]
Come on, let's keep walking.
[action]
Best day ever. ]
Okay.
[action]
Hey, R..? Do you have dreams?
[action]
Mm- maybe? But I don't... [ He tilts side to side. He doesn't even know how to word this. He's really disappointed in his speaking ability right now. ]
-...sleep? [ He hasn't been doing that nap thing to actually determine if 'dream' is a plural. He definitely did once before coming here. Or was that him hallucinating on remaining brains in his teeth? R hasn't exactly had a reason to lay down and stare at a ceiling long enough to drift and find out. ]
[action]
Huh... I guess you don't. [That had been something she noticed while he'd been keeping her in the aeroplane. She never once saw him sleeping.]
You don't need to, do you? Not at all?
[action]
[ The dead don't sleep. Which is ironic in some ways considering the whole 'rest in peace' thing. There's no resting here. Though, he supposes once you actually drop for good-good then you finally get that sleeping. ]
I'd like to. [ Because it seems nice and significantly less creepy. ]
[action]
[She swings their hands idly, her free one moving up to tuck her scarf a bit closer to her chin.]
Have you tried it? Maybe you just need practice. [It's a joke.. mostly.]
[action]
Prac...tice? [ Are you joking, Julie? He can't even tell right now. ] I haven't tried.
[action]
Then maybe you should. [She lightly jostles against him, bumping her chin against his shoulder.] See what happens.
[action]
He probably should practice. Like actually lay in his bed. Staying up wandering around Juanes creeping out any shop-lifters or playing hoarded music while your nocturnal roommate calls his guidance counselor is probably not the best way to spend nights. ]
Worth a shot.
[action]
[A shrug.]
I mean, I kind of owe you one anyway.
[action]
Don't be creepy, Julie.
That was kind of hilarious. He's so funny.
...God, he needs more friends. ]
You don't owe... one.
[action]
I owe you more than one, but I was trying to be generous.
[action]
Guilty. ]
No owing... It was f-free of charge.
[action]
[She fixes him with a stern look.]
You're making this difficult, you know.
