So I'm supposed to believe that I used to be a fictional character and now I'm not a fictional character and I have to learn how to not be a fictional character because my fictional life is somehow different from not having a fictional life?

[Kate takes a breath.]

The being fictional part? I think the vast majority of us don't buy it, but no other explanation has been offered, either.

I'm not surprised. I just wish if they were going to kidnap a bunch of people, they'd come up with a better cover story.

To be honest, I'm not sure the people at the hospital know any better than we do. It's just the only thing they have.

What about the locals? The ones who aren't... fictional like we are. What do they have to say?

They were all told the same thing. Of course, I don't know who's been here the longest. We don't tend to be privy to that sort of information.

It's pretty hard to solve a mystery when someone's gone out of their way to hide the truth.

It might be bliss for some people, but I just think it's annoying.

Physics at the high school. I'm not the best with kids, but hey, it's a noble pursuit to shape their young minds into something great and all.

There's kids here?

Yes. Sadly enough. And all of them are required to attend school, ostensibly to learn how to act like real people.

What a joke. As if kidnapping adults wasn't bad enough.

...Yeah. It's tough enough without having your entire life uprooted like that.

Their parents must be worried sick. I guess the best we can do is look out for them.

I try my best. Even if they still do manage to try my patience a lot.

I don't know how I'd be with kids myself. I mean... The little ones are fine, I guess, but if they're anything like I was as a teenager... Well, there's a reason I'm a cop and not a teacher.

I felt the same way when I started, but somehow they've managed to grow on me.

That's good. I couldn't imagine being stuck in a job I didn't like.

... What else do people do here? Has everyone just... resigned to the fact that there isn't any way home that we know of?

Sometimes my own ability to adjust surprises me.

Well, there's the school, a hospital, a police force... we all figure that we're going to get out eventually, but most of us don't want to stay idle in the mean time.

Yeah, I definitely don't want to. Having nothing to do probably makes this all a million times worse.
