[Kate's at her desk at the precinct. Even though it's late, it's still pretty alive with activity, for reasons that are obvious if people can see the number of cases already piling up on her desk.]

And I thought I knew backlog working for the NYPD. This is ridiculous.

[She exhausted - she hadn't slept well since the Dark Hour fiasco, for a number of a reasons. Most it having to do with haunting thoughts of sniper fire she just can't seem to shake. Needless to say, she's at least glad she has work to distract her, even if she's not really happy with the reasons why.]

Sheska, are you still here?

[Pausing, she switches the feed to private.]

[Private to Sheska, Richard Castle, Koizumi and Kate Bishop]

Whatever you guys are doing right now... Please just be careful. There's something really not right going on.

Thanks Kate. You working late again tonight? Don't forget to get some rest before tomorrow. By the way things are going, it'll be another long day.

I might try for a nap in the breakroom later, but I don't see myself getting a lot of free time anytime soon. What are you doing up so late?

Oh you know. Watching too many cat videos online. Try to take care of yourself as best you can, okay?

[Sheska adjusts her new headset distractedly, but she's giving Kate an attentive look and a smile.]

Yes, I'm here! Did you need something?

Yeah, just a couple of questions. One, if you go home at any point tonight, would you mind bringing me back a fresh pair of clothes? I don't think I'm gonna get back to change tonight.

And two... Do you know what happened to the bag of gummy bears I had in my desk?

I have a short break in two hours or so... I can certainly pick you up some clothes at the same time. I was going to grab some of our leftovers and bring that with as well.

I don't! I know I had one or two the other day, when my bowl ran out up here, but I refilled it the day after, so I haven't been near your desk in a day or two. Why, is it gone?

And it's no big deal, I'm just starving. It's the kind of thing I'd usually blame on Castle, but I'm pretty sure he hasn't been around, either.

No, I haven't seen Mr. Castle around at all either. Well, I have some peanut N&N's up here, if you'd like, or-- Oh! Did you know that they package cheese in individual sticks, now? There are some in the break-room fridge with our names on them.

[That actually makes Beckett laugh.]

Remind me when... All of this slows down that there are still a lot of snacks I need to to introduce you to.

It's wonderful! I can't go into the Juanes snack section until we finish off some of the things at home, or I'd need to get a new storage space for them. There are so many options!

[Castle waits for her to end the call, and when she doesn't, he simply blows her a kiss.]

[She bites her bottom lip and glances around, like she's worried someone saw. And then she ends the feed with a really stupid grin on her face.]

[He wears his usual beatific smile.]

Of course, Ms Beckett. I have to take pains to be so, given the company I keep.

[The exhaustion and the bruises plain on his face may lessen the impact of his reassurance. Especially given that there are at least a couple cuts and bruises that are obviously new.]

You be careful too. You're going to be much closer to the crime and violence than I. [He hopes, at least. We'll see what Haruhi's thoughts on the matter are.]

Incidentally, I came across this post on the network, conveniently locked from the NYPD. I figured it might be of interest, though I am sure you have bigger worries at the moment.

[Kate's not sure what to roll her eyes at more - the bruises all over Koizumi's face or the network post she hadn't seen yet. The former being frustrating because she was really going to need to follow up on that and find out if he's okay... And the latter being annoying because she had really hoped people had something better to do here.]

Thanks. I'll pass it onto the boss... Nice to know we can trust that there's always some group of delinquents willing to take advantage of any situation.

And I'll be fine. Yeah, I'm closer to the crime but... That's why I get the gun.

[She pauses for a second.] Are you okay?

[Koizumi looks up, still smiling inscrutably. He seems to consider his words for a moment.]

Ah, I've been better - but I am faring just fine, thank you.

Yeah, you look just fine.

[She's staring at him skeptically. She's not gonna push him - not yet, anyway - but she is just gonna put it out there that she thinks he's kind of full of it.]

[His smile deepens a little in true amusement, this time directed at himself. He raises his hands as if in defeat, admitting that he probably wasn't looking his best right now.]

All right. I haven't exactly been having an easy time of it lately. I am a little out of my depth. However, the reason for my appearance... [He considers, then shakes his head. It would be dangerous for people to find out about Haruhi. Kate might not take what he had to say seriously, and if she let something slip... Well, the situation is volatile enough as it is. Besides, it wouldn't help him any with the Celestials.] I'm afraid it's not something I'm able to talk about. Suffice it to say that I know what I am doing, and I am handling the situation as well as I am able.

[She frowns. It's kind of hypocritical, of course, given how many times she's pulled the same line and thought she could handle something. And, given some of the things she's seen here, maybe she wouldn't be able to help at all. But she's still not thrilled with his dismissal.]

Fine, I'll admit, I've felt a little out of my depth the last few months. But whatever is going on... I'm here, if you need me.

[His smile softens a little, and looks a little truer.]

Thank you for the consideration. [There truly was nothing she could do about the Celestials, but it was kind of her to think of him, and there was no need to make her feel helpless.] I will keep it in mind.

[Having no idea what she's up against, it does make her feel better that she might be able to help, somehow, even if she really can't.]

I gotta get back to this case log... But take care of yourself.
