I was the youngest woman in the NYPD to make detective. I have a series of BOOKS based on me back home. I am REALLY good at my job. Is it too much to expect a LITTLE bit of respect around here?

And a bigger office?

Anyway, this is pretty much what it sounds like when I respect someone. The difference is I talk shit to you, rather than bitching about you to everyone else.

Look, we've only got 33 people on station payroll, counting the ME, the consultants, and Sheska. If I can swing promotions or budget raises, you've earned one. I'm just used to some hotshot admiral being the one who makes that decision.

If all it took to get a promotion was throwing a fit on the network, I would have done it weeks ago.

Of course it's not too much to ask. You're one of the best detectives in the precinct - you should always be respected.

The bigger office seems to mostly be a problem of space? There aren't many, and they're mostly taken by senior officers. But I can order you another filing cabinet if you need one.

You know, you could just be that upfront with the folks in charge and tell them you want a promotion. You have the respect of most of our team, at least as far as I can tell. You have mine. Command a little more and make the department recognize how good you are.

[Anita gets a mirror eyebrow raise.]

I shouldn't have to ask for a promotion. I've been here for six months and I have more experience than anyone else on this force. Besides, I don't even know what a promotion will mean around here. Probably more paperwork.

You shouldn't have to ask, but we don't live in a fair world, here or anywhere else. A lot of places will wait for you to show initiative or demand respect, especially if you're a woman. It's shitty, but that's how it is. I saw a lot of that in St. Louis. I got the respect I deserved by stepping up and demanding it.

I've never had to ask for anyone to pay attention to me. My closing rate tends to stand out on it's own. I'm not saying it's not good that people here don't get killed as often, but I've never felt like I had to parade myself around and tell people to pay attention.

Then you were luckier than most. Even when I was doing my most stellar work, I had to work to make people respect me. At least at home, it wasn't easy to be a woman working with the cops. We run the place here, but we sure as hell didn't there. No matter how many times I saved their asses, outside of the squad I normally worked with, all I ever got was condescension and pet names -- until I demanded that they give me the respect I was owed.
