I shouldn't have to ask for a promotion. I've been here for six months and I have more experience than anyone else on this force. Besides, I don't even know what a promotion will mean around here. Probably more paperwork.

You shouldn't have to ask, but we don't live in a fair world, here or anywhere else. A lot of places will wait for you to show initiative or demand respect, especially if you're a woman. It's shitty, but that's how it is. I saw a lot of that in St. Louis. I got the respect I deserved by stepping up and demanding it.

I've never had to ask for anyone to pay attention to me. My closing rate tends to stand out on it's own. I'm not saying it's not good that people here don't get killed as often, but I've never felt like I had to parade myself around and tell people to pay attention.

Then you were luckier than most. Even when I was doing my most stellar work, I had to work to make people respect me. At least at home, it wasn't easy to be a woman working with the cops. We run the place here, but we sure as hell didn't there. No matter how many times I saved their asses, outside of the squad I normally worked with, all I ever got was condescension and pet names -- until I demanded that they give me the respect I was owed.
