[ Jack emerges from the Employees Only entrance behind the counter, gives Ianto a quick peck to the cheek and circles round to meet The Doctor at one of the tables. He greets the familiar face with a smile and sits across from him, excited as ever. ]
Punctual as always, aren't you? I didn't expect you so soon. So. Tell me about this kid you met.
[ grins as soon as he sees him, suddenly energetic ]
Dead! The kid's a zombie, a sentient one. Need to find him what to eat, can't have him going after human brains. But— [ takes out his sonic screwdriver, throws it and catches it ] this is all I got. Can't do much for him without proper equipment... or money.
[ The Doctor's outburst of excitement causes Jack to lift his eyebrows, though honestly he shouldn't have been surprised. He rests his chin on his knuckles and watches him, interested. ]
Well, the sentient dead are more common than you might think. I had one working for me for several months. A bit gloomy at times, but he was still just as hard working as when he was alive.
[ Jack smiles and shrugs a shoulder. ]
There's plenty of things to do here, so I'm sure you won't have too hard a time finding something to do with yourself. Your next regeneration teaches, after all.
[ His smile just grows wider when he hears it's not uncommon. New things are always exciting, new potentially dangerous things even more so, but his expression turns neutral as soon as Jack mentions his next regeneration, there's a subject he's not exactly eager to explore. ]
I'll get bored. Doing the same thing day after day after day... just a matter of time before I blow something up just to shake it up a little. But anyway, zombie. His name's R, gave him my psychic paper so he could communicate, told him not to attack people. Don't think he's rotting, which is odd for a zombie.
Owen didn't either. At least not at a rate I could tell, which considering we were right on the water, underneath a fountain, really should have made itself obvious fairly quickly. The universe works in mysterious ways, Doctor. Just... don't go removing any parts of him if he doesn't harass you.
[ Jack taps his lip in thought. ]
I think I might have seen his post on the Network. Not good on words, is he? Smart thinking with the Psychic Paper. That's why I like you. Unconventional uses for everyday objects. Very you.
[ Jack sits back and considers The Doctor with a fond smile one would use with an old friend. It's sweet how much of his early memories of The Doctor resurfaced here with him like this, and just how endearing it all is to him. ]
That's what I like about you. You like new. It's exciting for you, and that... it helps. If there's any way that I can help...
[ He taps his fingers on the table, he has a number of things to talk about and very little idea of how to approach them. ]
I can sort myself out, always do. But there are things I think I'd rather not know, [ he shifts, looking slightly uneasy ] I regenerated— was about to regenerate right after...
[ trails off, distracted by his own thoughts. After a moment he shakes himself out of it and continues in a much more lighter (if not entirely genuine) tone. ]
I'll find out eventually what sort of crises we— they? Weird to think of yourself in third person, isn't it? Anyway, I'll find out, but I'd rather have some distance first.
[ Jack nods, understanding entirely the temptation to find out the future, and even the past, and knowing that there are just too many things out there that don't need knowing. ]
And you deserve to be entirely your own person. So maybe teaching isn't for you. However, if you like, I could use a hand setting some stuff up here. I was always more of an action man than an engineer. I don't know what I can pay you, but it'd be nice to have an extra set of hands in the warehouse. Extra screwdrivers might help too.
[ He gives Jack an honest smile, it's good to have friends. ]
I'm not worried about finding myself, that's up to the new one to find out who they are, how they're different. [ and his smile widens, it's odd to talk about regeneration but in a good way. ]
Warehouse sounds much better than school, [ takes out his sonic screwdriver and waves it at him ] can help put up shelves.
[ The immortal human nods, as there are quite a few things that need assembling that he's been sitting on for some time, but since starting up Torchwood: New Moore, he's had other thoughts on his mind as well. ]
Well, as much as I'd like to have a handsome handyman around, I'm not sure that Ianto would be so keen. But I think I can find some other projects as well. If you don't mind, that is. I'm not about to pretend I can order a Time Lord around or anything.
Oh. So now I'm old and stupid. Thanks. You're a fabulous date. Really. Keep it up.
I mean... Unless you like getting bossed around. If that's the case, then I think I can think of a lot more interesting things to have you do than put up shelves and help me build cells. Most of them might involve you taking off your trousers or a generous amount of baby oil.
Can't have a handsome handyman around, but having them drop their trousers would be acceptable? I'm looking forward to meeting this Ianto, he must have interesting tastes.
No, just a lot of patience. And besides, that wasn't the point.
The point is, Doctor, that you're clever and know more about alien tech than almost anyone here. In fact, I bet you'd be really interested to know that there's a Dalek space ship here. Empty except for some people living inside it, but harmless otherwise.
[ A concerned look crosses Jack's face. He folds his hands on the table and leans in to listen close. ]
But it hasn't done anything yet. I'm not sure it's even really active. The guy living on it? He can control magnetic fields on metals, so even if that ship activates, I have a feeling he could probably handle himself just fine.
[ But an explosion could be bad. Jack chews his lip, drifting into thought as he contemplates the consequences. ]
It isn't really in the city proper, closer to the outskirts. Do you think it could still be a problem?

You must be so proud of yourself. Does it have to be bowling? We could do something else, gotta talk to you about this kid I met.

Sure, I'll bite. Just name a time and place and I'll work with ot.

[he gets there earlier than Jack, even. Sitting by the street side, hands inside his pockets and looking a little lost, not that he'd ever admit it]

[ he frowns, thoughtful ]
I'll need a job. A proper job. Ugh.

Psychic paper's an everyday object now, is it? Which century have you been living in?
no subject
Well, it's normal for you. A lot of things are normal for you. Except for all of this. How are you coping?
no subject
No idea. [ he grins at Jack ] That's new too, I usually know how I'm doing.

Dalek technology is never harmless, if the ship activated and detected non-dalek lifeforms inside, it could self-destruct.
