Is it just me, or is the magic in this world really messed up? Unless there's an actual explanation for what's causing the weird stuff, but I sure as heck haven't heard anything on that front.

You do have a particular issue with cats. Birds aren't the only ones with cat problems though! People with allergies, dogs, mice...
