So, while we're having a bit of a quiet time, sort of, question to ponder and/or discuss:

Why do you think we've been brought here?

Inquiring minds want to know your opinion.

It doesn't appear to be a popular theory, but it almost seems that the process of bringing us here isn't something someone is controlling. We should consider the possibility that this is a natural phenomenon - or at least one which nobody can influence - and that the 'authorities' are simply responding to this bleed through from other realities.

Of course, it is entirely possible that someone is governing this - though even so I would posit that they may not have as much control as many of us seem to assume. There's no indication that they care who we are, which would seem to imply that - although there may have been factors which influence who is chosen - there is no conscious decision as to who should be brought here. Therefore, I would think it likely in that occurrence that the point would be to test some sort of technology that alters or influences the boundaries between realities.

Well, those would be my two guesses, at any rate.

Perhaps something happened here, and it cracked the skin of the universe in this particular spot. Or perhaps this island is the epicenter of some expanse of natural or magical or mystical power, and they are simply attempting to contain this incursion. Consider - if other realities started bleeding into yours from a crack in the universe, and absolutely anything could come through, wouldn't the authorities in your world try to contain it? There would seem to be nothing to prevent, say, an evil version of Superman from coming through. In a truly infinite multiverse, it's not only inevitable that one exists, but that an infinite number of them exist.

As the laws of physics seem to fluctuate in this world, and there are other worlds where things many of us might have deemed impossible exist, it's difficult to know if this is a localized phenomenon. We have no idea what the rules of this universe are, so we can't even begin to guess what is outside our little bubble. Natural phenomenon tend to be more random in your universe, but if you think about it, there's no guarantee that your logic and common sense transcend your own reality and translate to this one.

As to what such technology might be used for, who can say? As a weapon? There are any number of ways you could imagine for such a device to be used offensively. To acquire something they need? Or as an escape route - perhaps this world is at war, and they want to make sure they have a way out. They could be doing it to establish contact and trade with other realities.

Perhaps they are doing it simply because they can. It might be simple curiosity.

I'm not saying I agree with them, or that I approve of their methods. I'm not saying that the government is innocent - goodness knows atrocious things have been done to minorities in the past, supposedly for the greater good, but really because the majority is simply angry, or scared. Whatever their reason for doing this, they are not a just government.

However, I don't believe the government would have to be the cause of all of this for them to act this poorly regarding us. Indeed, it often seems that governments excel at acting poorly, even with little cause. All I said is that I find a natural or uncontrolled phenomenon more probable than any other theory I have heard put forward.

Ah, I did not know that, though I suppose it shouldn't surprise me. Given what we've seen of the government, it's not surprising they wouldn't hesitate to trap the native inhabitants of the island here as well. And if they allowed anyone to pass out of the city, there would be a risk of some of us eventually escaping the same way.

Still, it's discouraging, I suppose, to confirm that such an approach would not be fruitful.

To me, the disappearances make the theory more likely, not less, as there is no discernible pattern or motive to them. And however it happens, whether naturally or through some mechanism, it would seem to make sense than they vanish the same way they appear in the first place.

I'll admit there are inconsistencies. It's not a perfect theory. But nothing else is either, and it's the best one I've heard.

Again, a possibility.

Honestly, that should probably bother anyone here who is even remotely sane. [So, not him.] But once more... what can we do about it?

True, we do all seem to be distracted by the here and now. [He shrugs.] I'm honestly not certain where to start. There's so much we don't know, so much that doesn't make any sense, from our perspective.

If you have any ideas, I'd be more than happy to help however I can. It not my first time investigating unusual phenomena, even if this is a bit... bigger than the cases I'm used to.
