Instructions:

1. Post your character's name. One reply per character so that they're all neatly organized.
2. When you tag to a character's thread, put your participating character's name in the subject line.

post-amnesia!

Steph hoped she didn't look like a regretful juvenile delinquent, pacing in front of the police station. It probably wasn't a good idea to linger, but she was still weighing the possibility they'd have some idea on what the hell was going on with all the mistletoe against having too much contact with anyone on the force when she'd probably be seeing them as BG. On the other hand, maybe it was better to get the lay of the land, too.

And check out the cute police officers, her brain supplied helpfully. She ignored it, like any self-respecting adult would, especially given how disastrously her crush on Detective Nick had gone.

Kate was coming back from grabbing a cup off coffee, trying not to think about how awkward this whole month had become between Christmas and the mistletoe and the memory loss. It was a lot to take in and she had plenty of work to keep her busy, but it didn't seem like enough anymore to keep her mind from wandering. This island had done a lot to make her lose focus and throw her off her game. She didn't like it.

She noticed the girl pacing outside the police station and put those thoughts on hold, her forehead burrowing in concern. The girl seemed out of place, but not in dire straights either.

"Hey," Kate said, approaching her. "You need some help?"

"Oh," Steph said, freezing midway through a step in a way that totally didn't convey I'M UP TO SOMETHING, or anything. Good job, Steph. "No, I—well, maybe?"

She relaxed into a more natural position, scratching at the back of her neck. "I was just, wondering about the whole mistletoe thing?"

Kate's eyebrow had been cocked until the girl got the question out, whereupon she relaxed a little. She could field this.

Maybe.

"As far as we can tell, it's another... plot. You know, island trick." She sighed. "I'm sorry I can't really give you better news. But I think this is one we're just gonna have to wait out."

"Okay," Steph muttered, a little sullen. "I guess I just have to stay inside for a while."

Completely unaware of the plant now growing above them in the wires, Steph stepped forward with a sort of embarrassed smile.

"Thanks, I was just. It's a bad time for kissing random strangers." Her brows furrowed. "Not that there's ever really a good time for that."

Kate didn't see it either, but she looked at the girl and got that familiar feeling. Resisting the urge to groan, she stepped forward too, returning the smile.

"Believe me, these things definitely know how to suck the romance out of a situation." Or rather, pump romance in where it was completely unneeded and then would turn completely awkward. Kate suspected there was mistletoe around them now, somewhere, but she was much too stubborn to look for it. "What makes right now worse than any other time?"

"Probably the fact that I'm still recovering from kissing my ex while I had amnesia," Steph offered, which...might be too much information? She'd kind of lost the ability to tell, and besides, she felt on the edge of spilling even more. "Plus I'm at a time in my life when kissing should be the last thing on my mind."

Steph began to feel the pull herself, which meant now she'd told a woman she'd just met things that she probably wouldn't want to know, and now they'd have to kiss. Just. Super. Steph sighed.

"There's mistletoe around here, isn't there," Steph said, the way one might after tersely realizing that the person they'd just been trash-talking was standing behind them.

Kate just sighed in resignation. The poor girl had just spilled her guts; no doubt with a little help from the mistletoe. So Kate just nodded, trying to keep her face sympathetic.

"Yeah, I think so," she said grimly. She wasn't sure if her usual Do It and Pretend Like it Didn't Happen routine was going to work really well in this case, because she didn't want to make the girl any more uncomfortable than she clearly already was. "If it makes you feel any better, I'm not real thrilled about having to kiss anyone but my boyfriend." She reached out and brazenly tucked a strand of blonde hair behind the girl's ear - a move that was more mistletoe-driven than something Kate would have ever done on her own.
